Valentine’s Day 2021 | What you Need to Know
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. I’m sure that most of you must be planning something special for your Valentine. Every year, on the 14th day of February, millions across the world present their loved ones with gifts.
Gifts ranging from candy, flowers, chocolates, and such other Valentine’s Day gifts. History has it that the reason behind this celebration is the story of a cleric. The cleric named Valentine was executed over a thousand years ago.
Valentine’s Day is always celebrated on February 14. It is also called the Saint Valentine feast. It is widely recognized as a celebration of love, agape, or romance around the world. Although very many people term it to be a romantic kind of love celebration, it was originally a Western Christian feast day.
Valentine’s day was established in AD 496 by Pope Gelasius I. He did so in honor of Saint Valentine of Rome. Saint Valentine was imprisoned and executed on February 14 of AD 269 for performing weddings for soldiers. The said soldiers were forbidden to marry. Another reason was ministering to Christians persecuted by the Roman empire.
If you read or listen to ancient stories, it is believed that Valentine healed his judge blind daughter. It is also believed that he converted and baptized about 20 or so people of the judge’s house by doing this.
Interestingly, he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell before his execution. And this letter brought about Valentine’s love letters we have today ending with “Your Valentine” instead of “Yours Faithfully or Sincerely”.
Getting to the 18th century in England, Valentine’s day has become very much associated with romantic love. A time whereby people propose love to each other, get gifts, and do things only couples would do.
Even though it is not a public holiday anywhere in the world, but its celebration is almost rivaling some public holidays. Virtually everyone wants to have a Val, someone to call their own and spend that day with.
